Why is My Heel in Pain?
Heel pain can be debilitating, and it has a variety of causes. Because the heel is the first part of the foot to hit the ground when walking, it can bear the weight of the entire body causing pain during prolonged periods of walking and standing. Plantar fasciitis is the most common form of heel pain. This occurs when the plantar fascia, the ligament running along the bottom of the foot connecting the heel to the toes, becomes inflamed and aggravated. Plantar fasciitis pain is at its worst in the morning or after rest, and it usually subsidies throughout the day. Heel spurs, which are abnormal growths of bone on the heel, can also lead to heel pain. These form when calcium deposits build up on the back of the heel. If you are struggling with heel pain, it is important to consult with a podiatrist for a proper diagnosis and treatment method.
Many people suffer from bouts of heel pain. For more information, contact Genine Befumo, DPM of University Foot and Ankle Center, L.L.C. Our doctor can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.
Causes of Heel Pain
Heel pain is often associated with plantar fasciitis. The plantar fascia is a band of tissues that extends along the bottom of the foot. A rip or tear in this ligament can cause inflammation of the tissue.
Achilles tendonitis is another cause of heel pain. Inflammation of the Achilles tendon will cause pain from fractures and muscle tearing. Lack of flexibility is also another symptom.
Heel spurs are another cause of pain. When the tissues of the plantar fascia undergo a great deal of stress, it can lead to ligament separation from the heel bone, causing heel spurs.
Why Might Heel Pain Occur?
- Wearing ill-fitting shoes
- Wearing non-supportive shoes
- Weight change
- Excessive running
Treatments
Heel pain should be treated as soon as possible for immediate results. Keeping your feet in a stress-free environment will help. If you suffer from Achilles tendonitis or plantar fasciitis, applying ice will reduce the swelling. Stretching before an exercise like running will help the muscles. Using all these tips will help make heel pain a condition of the past.

Causes of Stress Fractures in Children
A hairline fracture is another name for a stress fracture. When it occurs in the foot, it can be accompanied by subtle pain and discomfort, and your walking may be affected as well. It is considered to be a common injury in active children, and may worsen when pressure is exerted on the affected area. Stress fractures can happen as a result of repetitive stress that is endured by the feet from participating in running and jumping activities. Children who have fragile bones or vitamin deficiencies may be prone to developing stress fractures. Common symptoms may include bones in the feet that are painful to touch, and swelling. If your child has pain in their feet, it is suggested that you consult with a podiatrist who can properly diagnose and treat stress fractures.
Stress fractures occur when there is a tiny crack within a bone. To learn more, contact Genine Befumo, DPM from University Foot and Ankle Center, L.L.C. Our doctor can provide the care you need to keep you pain free and on your feet.
How Are They Caused?
Stress fractures are the result of repetitive force being placed on the bone. Since the lower leg and feet often carry most of the body’s weight, stress fractures are likely to occur in these areas. If you rush into a new exercise, you are more likely to develop a stress fracture since you are starting too much, too soon. Pain resulting from stress fractures may go unnoticed at first, however it may start to worsen over time.
Risk Factors
- Gender – They are more commonly found in women compared to men.
- Foot Problems – People with unusual arches in their feet are more likely to develop stress fractures.
- Certain Sports – Dancers, gymnasts, tennis players, runners, and basketball players are more likely to develop stress fractures.
- Lack of Nutrients – A lack of vitamin D and calcium may weaken the bones and make you more prone to stress fractures
- Weak Bones – Osteoporosis can weaken the bones therefore resulting in stress fractures
Stress fractures do not always heal properly, so it is important that you seek help from a podiatrist if you suspect you may have one. Ignoring your stress fracture may cause it to worsen, and you may develop chronic pain as well as additional fractures.

Gout Pain and the Big Toe
Joint pain in the big toe and surrounding area could be indicative of gout. This is an arthritic condition that generally causes severe pain and discomfort, and many patients also find it difficult to walk. Common symptoms of gout can include swelling and redness around the affected joint, and it may be painful to move the toe. This condition is caused by excess uric acid in the blood, and it can occur from specific types of foods that are eaten. These can consist of foods that have high levels of purines, which may include shellfish, organ meats, and drinks that have elevated amounts of sugar. Research has shown that patients who are obese may be prone to developing gout as well. If you are afflicted with gout or experience gout attacks, it is strongly advised that you are under the care of a podiatrist who can effectively treat and manage this condition.

What Is Gout?
Gout is a form of arthritis that is characterized by sudden, severe attacks of pain, redness, and tenderness in the joints. The condition usually affects the joint at the base of the big toe. A gout attack can occur at any random time, such as the middle of the night while you are asleep.
Symptoms
- Intense Joint Pain - Usually around the large joint of your big toe, and it most severe within the first four to twelve hours
- Lingering Discomfort - Joint discomfort may last from a few days to a few weeks
- Inflammation and Redness -Affected joints may become swollen, tender, warm and red
- Limited Range of Motion - May experience a decrease in joint mobility
Risk Factors
- Genetics - If family members have gout, you’re more likely to have it
- Medications - Diuretic medications can raise uric acid levels
- Gender/Age - Gout is more common in men until the age of 60. It is believed that estrogen protects women until that point
- Diet - Eating red meat and shellfish increases your risk
- Alcohol - Having more than two alcoholic drinks per day increases your risk
- Obesity - Obese people are at a higher risk for gout
Prior to visiting your podiatrist to receive treatment for gout, there are a few things you should do beforehand. If you have gout you should write down your symptoms--including when they started and how often you experience them, important medical information you may have, and any questions you may have. Writing down these three things will help your podiatrist in assessing your specific situation so that he or she may provide the best route of treatment for you.

Yoga for Plantar Fasciitis Pain
Plantar fasciitis is a condition in which the plantar fascia, a ligament that runs along the bottom of the foot, becomes inflamed. This can cause a stabbing pain in the heel. Stretching the foot may help reduce the pain associated with plantar fasciitis. Did you know that you can stretch the feet while doing yoga? For example, while standing, lift your right heel off of the ground and roll onto your right toes. Then place your right heel back onto the ground and repeat on the opposite foot. Do this several times to stretch the arch area. For more information about the benefits of yoga and stretching for plantar fasciitis pain, please consult with a podiatrist.
Plantar fasciitis can be very painful and inconvenient. If you are experiencing heel pain or symptoms of plantar fasciitis, contact Genine Befumo, DPM from University Foot and Ankle Center, L.L.C. Our doctor can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.
What Is Plantar Fasciitis?
Plantar fasciitis is the inflammation of the thick band of tissue that runs along the bottom of your foot, known as the plantar fascia, and causes mild to severe heel pain.
What Causes Plantar Fasciitis?
- Excessive running
- Non-supportive shoes
- Overpronation
- Repeated stretching and tearing of the plantar fascia
How Can It Be Treated?
- Conservative measures – anti-inflammatories, ice packs, stretching exercises, physical therapy, orthotic devices
- Shockwave therapy – sound waves are sent to the affected area to facilitate healing and are usually used for chronic cases of plantar fasciitis
- Surgery – usually only used as a last resort when all else fails. The plantar fascia can be surgically detached from the heel
While very treatable, plantar fasciitis is definitely not something that should be ignored. Especially in severe cases, speaking to your doctor right away is highly recommended to avoid complications and severe heel pain. Your podiatrist can work with you to provide the appropriate treatment options tailored to your condition.
