Exercises for an MTP Sprain

If you have sprained one of the metatarsophalangeal (MTP) joints in your foot your podiatrist may suggest that you do gentle exercises to help your recovery. Gentle stretches can help to keep your muscles and ligaments flexible. One simple stretch is a great toe extension. To do this exercise, sit down and place your affected foot over your other knee. With one hand, grasp the heel. With your other hand, gently pull your big toe backwards. You should feel a stretch along the bottom of your foot. Choosing the Right Shoes for Toddlers

It’s important to know that shoes for toddlers and shoes for older children are not the same. The final foot bone is only beginning to form at about 3 years of age, and feet will not be fully developed until the teen years. It’s wise to choose shoes for toddlers that offer proper support, and make sure the child’s feet are accurately measured in both length and width. Although the shoes should be lightweight, they also should have a sturdy, flat sole. Because a small child’s foot grows so rapidly, it is suggested to replace shoes every three months to ensure they fit correctly. Thin Cracks in Foot Bones

Stress fractures are very thin cracks in a bone. They are often called hairline fractures because of their thin, hair-like appearance. These fractures are typically caused by overuse. Symptoms may include pain which develops gradually in a generalized area, swelling, tenderness, and difficulty bearing weight on the affected foot. A podiatrist can diagnose a stress fracture through a physical examination and X-ray, MRI, or bone scan. Stress fractures are particularly common among runners, basketball players, and ballet dancers. A stress fracture in the foot can affect any of the foot bones, but is usually found on the metatarsal, navicular, calcaneal, medial malleolus, or talus bones. How Are They Caused?

Stress fractures are the result of repetitive force being placed on the bone. Since the lower leg and feet often carry most of the body’s weight, stress fractures are likely to occur in these areas. If you rush into a new exercise, you are more likely to develop a stress fracture since you are starting too much, too soon.  Pain resulting from stress fractures may go unnoticed at first, however it may start to worsen over time.

Risk Factors

  • Gender – They are more commonly found in women compared to men.
  • Foot Problems – People with unusual arches in their feet are more likely to develop stress fractures.
  • Certain Sports – Dancers, gymnasts, tennis players, runners, and basketball players are more likely to develop stress fractures.
  • Lack of Nutrients – A lack of vitamin D and calcium may weaken the bones and make you more prone to stress fractures
  • Weak Bones – Osteoporosis can weaken the bones therefore resulting in stress fractures

Stress fractures do not always heal properly, so it is important that you seek help from a podiatrist if you suspect you may have one. Ignoring your stress fracture may cause it to worsen, and you may develop chronic pain as well as additional fractures.

Can the Inside of My Ankle Break?

The bony bump on the inside of your ankle is actually the end of your tibia bone. This anatomical region of the tibia is known as the medial malleolus and is also the inner bone of your ankle. The medial malleolus supports the ankle on the inside of the foot and attaches to the major (deltoid) ligament there. Although ankle fractures of the medial malleolus usually occur in tandem with other ankle bone fractures, an isolated medial malleolus fracture can occur when the foot is forcefully rotated/rolled outwardly or inwardly. The medial malleolus can also suffer from a stress fracture from repetitive activity which weakens it over time. Symptoms of a medial malleolus fracture may include swelling and bruising throughout the foot, pain on the inner part of the ankle, and even difficulty walking. In order to be diagnosed and treated properly and to make sure there are no other injuries to other bones or tissue, it is very important to be seen by a podiatrist if you experience any of these symptoms.

Is My Stubbed Toe Serious?

What to Know About a Broken Toe

Although most people try to avoid foot trauma such as banging, stubbing, or dropping heavy objects on their feet, the unfortunate fact is that it is a common occurrence. Given the fact that toes are positioned in front of the feet, they typically sustain the brunt of such trauma. When trauma occurs to a toe, the result can be a painful break (fracture).

Possible Reasons Your Heel Hurts

Heel pain is very common and can be caused by a variety of foot and ankle problems. A stabbing pain in the heel that is at its worst in the morning or after a long period of rest may indicate plantar fasciitis. Plantar fasciitis is the inflammation of the ligament that runs along the bottom of the foot. Pain in the back of the heel and back of the ankle may be due to Achilles tendonitis. In children between the ages of 8 and 14, one common cause of heel pain is Sever’s disease, an inflammation of the growth plate of the heel bone. Causes of Heel Pain

Heel pain is often associated with plantar fasciitis. The plantar fascia is a band of tissues that extends along the bottom of the foot. A rip or tear in this ligament can cause inflammation of the tissue.

Achilles tendonitis is another cause of heel pain. Inflammation of the Achilles tendon will cause pain from fractures and muscle tearing. Lack of flexibility is also another symptom.

Heel spurs are another cause of pain. When the tissues of the plantar fascia undergo a great deal of stress, it can lead to ligament separation from the heel bone, causing heel spurs.

  • Weight change           
  • Excessive running
